A pandeiro made entirely by hand
This exceptional pandeiro is entirely handmade by Mestre Ivan in Santo Amaro, Bahia.
No machines are used to manufacture the instrument. The wood, goat leather and other components are prepared, worked and assembled by hand by Mestre Ivan, with the exception of the metal parts, which are manufactured separately.
Each instrument takes several hours of manual work and carries the direct mark of its maker’s craftsmanship.
A craft passed down through mestres
Mestre Ivan’s work is part of a genuine tradition of knowledge passed from one mestre to another.
He learned to make pandeiros from Mestre Ferreirinha, who taught him the techniques and knowledge involved in traditional pandeiro making.
Later, his contact with Mestre Lua Rasta also influenced the way he designed and built his pandeiros. These encounters helped shape his own style and approach to the instrument.
Today, Mestre Ivan continues this tradition while developing his own distinctive way of working.
Wood, iron and goat leather
The pandeiro is made from wood, combined with iron components and a goat leather head.
The handmade construction gives every instrument its own character. Natural variations in the wood, leather, colours and finish are normal and make each piece different.
The result is a robust, rustic and lively instrument, far removed from the standardized appearance of mass-produced instruments.
Pyrography decoration
The decorations are created directly on the wood using a pyrography tool.
Each pandeiro therefore receives its own handmade decoration before being signed by Mestre Ivan by hand.
The signature further emphasizes the personal and unique character of each instrument.
