Capoeira Atabaque with Tarraxa / Parafuso – Rum, Rumpi and Lê
The Rum, Rumpi and Lê atabaques with tarraxa (parafuso) tuning are traditional percussion instruments used in Capoeira, Maculelê, percussion workshops and Afro-Brazilian musical practices, including certain contexts associated with Candomblé and Umbanda.
The Rum generally has a deeper register, the Rumpi an intermediate register, and the Lê a higher-pitched sound. The choice depends on your practice, preferred sound and desired instrument size.
Select your model from the product options: Rum, Rumpi or Lê. All three models feature a screw-tension system, known as tarraxa or parafuso, allowing the drumhead tension to be adjusted using metal fittings. Each instrument is handcrafted with a genuine cowhide drumhead, a varnished wooden body and an included wooden stand.
Approximate dimensions and weight
- RUM: drumhead 27 cm; diameter 35 cm; maximum body circumference 110 cm; height without stand 88 cm; with stand 113 cm; weight 13 kg.

A responsible choice: European craftsmanship and selected wood
To offer quality instruments at a more accessible price, we have chosen traditional European craftsmanship. Shipping atabaques from Brazil involves high transportation costs and a risk of damage due to the instruments' size.
This production approach also allows us to use wood sourced from responsibly managed forests, respecting natural resources. Some wood species traditionally used in Brazil are protected or regulated, making this approach a more sustainable alternative while preserving the qualities expected from a percussion instrument.
A handcrafted instrument with its own character
Each atabaque is individually handcrafted. Small variations may occur in the colour and appearance of the leather, the wood grain or the varnish finish. These differences are normal and reflect the unique character of each instrument.

Protected delivery
Your atabaque is carefully packaged before shipping and benefits from insurance appropriate to its value.
Upon delivery, carefully inspect the parcel in the presence of the carrier. If you notice damage, signs of opening or visible impact, record precise written reservations with the carrier. If possible, take photos of the parcel and contact us promptly so we can assist you.
Shipping costs and delivery times may vary depending on the destination and carrier. Check the available options before completing your order.
Care and tuning advice
Wood and leather are natural materials. Store your atabaque in a dry place, away from excessive humidity and major temperature changes.
Before each use, check the condition of the drumhead, tuning system and instrument as a whole. Adjust the tarraxas or parafusos gradually and evenly. Avoid overtightening to prevent unnecessary stress on the drumhead and body.
A tuning tutorial is available on our YouTube channel to guide you through the adjustments and help preserve your instrument's sound quality.
